3D Printing

I borrowed a Makerbot Replicator 2 about three weeks ago and it’s been running pretty much non-stop ever since. This thing is incredible. I started off printing a few example files just to see if the thing would work. The precision, consistency, and reliability was way better than I had imagined (and read online).

After a few test prints, I started designing my own pieces. I’m using Maya to model and MakerBot Desktop to print. I export .stl, though MakerBot Desktop can also read .obj.

I’m so amazed with what this desktop printer can do, and what it will be able to do in the future. It reminds me of the computer revolution. The early personal computer boards were built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. It was hard for the non-tech to see the potential of typing on a screen and running programs. Today we couldn’t imagine a world without it. With this machine I can see the future of rapid on site manufacturing. Currently it has it’s limitations, just like the first PCs, but in time there will be full color, faster prints, built in circuits, limitless resolution and materials. Manufacturing will no longer be an industry. Design with global collaboration will bring forth the best possible solutions for life’s challenges. 3D printers will bring those designs to you.
